My Dear American Family and American Friends,

After a busy day of travel and sightseeing, I decided to take a break in the lobby of my hotel and read "The Nation," one of two English language newspapers published daily in Bangkok.
I read the following story which I send to you without any descriptive adjectives or editorial comment.

I know how I reacted to the story. I am certain you will look into your hearts and react in your own way . . . .

More than twenty years ago, a Vietnamese man who had been a soldier in the Army of South Vietnam, was sent to a "reeducation" camp by the new Communist government. Because of his career, he and his family were outcasts in their own country. He decided to leave.

This man carried one daughter on his shoulders. His young son "Bo" led another young sister by the hand as they made their escape through the jungles of Vietnam to Cambodia. Then to the Philippines and finally to California.

Years later, Bo served in the U.S. Army and after his tour of duty he enlisted in the California National Guard. Bo and his National Guard unit were deployed to Iraq. Bo was killed by an explosion last week. Bo was buried by his father and sisters in a cemetery in Riverside, California.
